Before, our contestant's desk was so cluttered there was no way of finding what she was looking for.
After only a four hour organizing session, she has a functional desk where she can find what she is looking for with a clear work space for all of her many interests. She is able to work on all of her volunteer activities, accomplishing more in less time.
Here is what we did and what you can do:
- Sorted papers into three categories - keep, shred and recycle. We even tackled papers in other areas of the office. Debb was amazingly quick at sorting through an overwhelming amount of paper.
- Cleared the desk, sorting items into categories - office supplies, cub scout items, craft supplies, and things that did not belong in the office to go elsewhere.
- Stored one of each office product at Debb's fingertips for use and extra supplies in a container where she can find replacements.
- Displayed some important pictures to serve as inspiration as she works and remind her that this space should be a clear workspace.
- Set up an action file system for paper that needs to be dealt with immediately to replace the stacks of paper on her desk.
- Talked about how to maintain the order created by taking the extra time to put things in their place immediately.
